Rotaract Clubs of the United Arab Emirates (Dubai, Jumeirah, and Dubai Cosmopolitan) joined forces with Liter of Light on October 2nd, 2022, to build solar lights that will be incorporated into solar art installations that shall be displayed during the opening ceremony of COP27 in Egypt and then shall be transferred to light up communities in developing villages that are suffering from energy poverty.
The plastic housing of the solar lights are made of recycled plastics, mainly from old bottles.
Liter of Light is a global, grassroots movement dedicated to providing affordable, sustainable solar light to people with little to no access to electricity. The hand-built solar lights are a compact and adaptable option for lighting home, urban and rural areas. The parts are deliberately chosen to be widely available, even in the most isolated locations.
The Rotaract Clubs workshop’s aim was to create awareness for climate action in the UAE with an initial launch of one of the largest hand-built solar artworks and messages for the planet using 1,200 lights assembled by hand through our Net Zero campaign.
Liter of Light is sharing a message of hope for the planet with the unique landscape of the Egyptian pyramids in order to amplify the voices calling for a more sustainable future in the run-up to COP27. A representation with the words “The Power Is Yours” pointing in the direction of the pyramids, with 17 rays each representing one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
