Rotary Winschoten is responding to the puzzle craze during the Corona crisis. For the first time, the club is selling a specially designed ‘Rotary in action’ puzzle in the popular Jan van Haasteren style. The proceeds will go towards the development and installation of a Bubble Barrier from The Great Bubble Barrier; a bubble screen that uses air bubbles to stop and capture plastic in the rivers before it flows into the North Sea. Every year, more than eight billion kilos of plastic waste disappears into the seas and oceans worldwide, 80% of which comes from rivers.
Especially in these Corona times, we are extra aware of the importance of good health. This has everything to do with our food and therefore with our environment. Because all plankton, the basis of our food chain, already contains plastic, we eat two kilos of plastic per year. That is of course not healthy and not good for the environment. With our support for EndPlasticSoup, the global initiative of Rotary, we want to change that’, says Freerk Potze, chairman of Rotary Club Winschoten. In doing so, the club is joining the recently launched new focus area of Rotary International: Supporting the Environment.
