During the Ambassador Club meeting on 17th March, Fionn Ferreira has been recognized as Young Ambassador for EndPlasticSoup.
Fionn is a 20-year-old student, scientist, anti-plastic pollution innovator focusing on solving the plastic pollution crisis. Growing up by the seashore in Ireland, he became passionate about solving the microplastic issue.
Removing microplastics
Fionn built several inventions to test for these microplastics and he decided to invent a method to remove microplastics from water himself.
Following many failed attempts, he made a device that uses a magnet-based method to remove the particles from water with high extraction rates as well as being environmentally safe. Fionn won the 2019 Google Science Fair for his invention and founded Fionn & Co. in 2020, where he is using his method to build a device for the efficient removal of microplastics from water on a large scale. His startup is being supported by Robert Downey Jr’s Footprint Coalition.
Forbes 30 under 30
While Fionn is at university studying Chemistry, he is a sought-after keynote speaker. He regularly contributes to World Economic Forum, Vivatech, Smithsonian, National Geographic and other events that advance the transition towards a circular economy. He was also named a Forbes 30 under 30.
Fionn’s new startup Gl!c aims to be an online platform hub for young inventors, scientists and innovators to communicate and obtain a toolset of resources to bring their ideas to life.
He believes inspiring others to invent is of high importance and is therefore working on several TV shows and his first book to inspire more people to take action.
Fionn is also the founder of the Green Journey Coalition.
Grant from EndPlasticSoup
The 1000 EUR grant that has been awarded with his recognition as Young Ambassador for EndPlasticSoup will be used to buy material for two undergraduate students currently testing my continuous flow microplastic removal device at the university of Texas. With the money microplastic samples will be bought, which will then be added to the water for subsequent extraction. Additionally, about 20% will go towards our grant writing efforts to apply for bigger grants.
