Why End Plastic Soup?
With this project, Rotaryclub Heemstede wants to contribute, in collaboration with the municipality of Heemstede and primary schools, to a clean living environment. Rotary members are committed to making the residents of this beautiful municipality more plastic. Starting with the youth, because together we will lead by example; by cleaning up litter.
Cleaning up litter with 350 kids
In the run-up to Saturday, June 1, 2019, we will be giving 15 guest lessons to 350 pupils at Heemstede primary schools in two weeks. We inform the children of groups 7 and 8 about plastic and litter and its impact on the environment and our future. And then we roll up our sleeves and together we clean up litter in the vicinity of the school. The class that cleans up the most waste wins a prize that is awarded (on 1 June) by the Sustainability Councilor of the municipality of Heemstede and the chairman of Rotary Heemstede. The prize is a «Build Your Own Robot» toolkit, with which students can build and program robots made from litter.
On June 1, 2019, we will be present with all the waste from the schools on the «End Plastic Soup square» on the Binnenweg (the shopping street of Heemstede), where all kinds of information will be given about plastic waste. There, it will be announced who «The most tidy school in Heemstede» is and who therefore wins the prize. Together we make an artwork from waste on site, there is a Photo Booth and much more. We will also provide information about plastic packaging at four local supermarkets. What role can the consumer play in this? Rotary members and officials engage in conversation with shopping visitors about the importance of responsible plastic use and the elimination of litter. Because Plastic Soup starts on the sidewalk!
