A hopeful children’s book: ‘Dit was de plastictijd’
A children’s book by the PlasticSoup Foundation about a global problem and young heroes
How do we explain to our children that we have a very big problem wrapped in bubble wrap? Not a nice message, but we’re going to tell it anyway.
The Plastic Soup Foundation had the book made by author Geert-Jan Roebers, illustrator Margot Westerman and photographer Michiel Spijkers.
The book was partly made possible by sponsors, including Rotary EndPlasticSoup.
The book takes children to the distant future, in which the plastic problem is a thing of the past. An archaeologist tells about the time we live in now: the plastic age, in which people threw away plastic cutlery after a party, animals got into trouble because of plastic waste and manufacturers were allowed to put microplastics in toothpaste.
In This Was the Plastic Age, the children go on an expedition to the plastic age with Dr. Buis, a plastic age expert from 2132. He tells everything about the plastic problem: what types were there, where in the world did they suffer from it and which young heroes tackled the plastic problem.
In each continent, the PlasticSoup Foundation has selected 3 young heroes who have risen up to tackle the plastic problem. These young heroes have demonstrated, gone on strike, started petitions, developed robots and much more.
New website and film lesson
The children’s book is supported by a website by and for children all over the world. Here, children will be able to find each other worldwide through videos. Not only the young heroes who have been given a place in the children’s book, but also other children who are concerned about plastic pollution or have a creative idea to solve it.
A film lesson is also being developed for primary school pupils: Young heroes about the plastic soup.
