The Rotary Clubs in Huizen started the new year fresh with the School Challenge, the first concrete campaign for End Plastic Soup Now. The School Challenge wants to make it possible for all primary schools in Huizen to do waste separation. Now it is not legally permitted to have waste collected separately by the GAD. They may only collect separate waste separately. The private waste collectors are too expensive for the schools.
The Municipality of Huizen has already started a pilot project on the Dr. Maria Montessorischool, the Flevoschool and the SG Huizermaat. But this pilot is coming to an end and continuity is important! The Tweemaster is already responsible for waste separation. All primary schools in Huizen were immediately enthusiastic about this plan and in collaboration with the municipality of Huizen, Gooi and Vechtstreek and the GAD, the Rotary clubs will make the waste separation possible. Of course there is also a good piece of awareness for the children. In collaboration with the Plastic Soup Foundation teaching materials are made available. We strive to have this realized before the summer holidays.
In the second half of 2019 and in 2020 all Rotary Clubs of ‚t Gooi try to extend the waste separation to all schools in‘ t Gooi and also to sports clubs and social institutions such as community centers. Via the MRA, the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, we then examine whether we can jointly ask the ministry to amend the law in this area so that schools, sports clubs and social institutions can participate in private waste separation.
The New Year’s dive was a great success with 400 participants, many spectators, the mayor and two aldermen who participated, but also the Huizen Schoon volunteers and the Rotary clubs in Huizen.
The New Year’s dive has also yielded two important results:
• Awareness for everyone with a festive touch, also thanks to the bags for all participants with the EndPlasticSoupNow logo
• 25% of the yield of the slice, chocolate milk, coffee, tea is intended for the promotion.
