Ralf Thiel, Director Health at EndPlasticSoup, RC Wiesbaden-Rheingau, D1820 Germany, presented the Theme Plastic and Health during the Synergy Europe meeting in January.
Based on the experiences in hospitals the EndPlasticSoup project group will support the discussion and actions to remove (plastic) waste from hospitals and in medical care:
- Avoid single use instruments of steel (e.g. needle holder)
- Plastic packaging: avoiding, separation and recycling
- Aluminium packaging (sutures etc): collect separately and recycle
- Conclude contract with medical products companies for returning single use products (f.e. automatic suture devices from Ethicon)
- Identification of „valuable plastics“ andrecycle separately
- Reintroduction of cotton coats instead of single use plastic coats/scrubs
- Reuse scrubs when entering/leaving operation room („re think hygiene“)
